Burt Awelagte, Zuni, carved this alluring little frog out of Wild Horse magnesite. The frog is 2 1/4" in length by 1 3/4" wide and 3/4" tall. The frog has turquoise eyes and is peering up to the side at you. I like how he has set the turquoise eyes so they seem to pop out as in life. The frog is three dimensional so see the other pictures for a full look at him. He is signed by the artist. Really nice gemstone speciamen.

Burt is from the Othole family of carvers from Zuni. Hisstyle is towards the traditional with arrowheads and bundle offerings."Abstract and unique is also a characteric of my creations."

The offering is a symbol to the fetish for providingprotection, good luck, peace and harmony for the beholder. The frog is known as a rain and fertility fetish and for centuries has been used to petition the spirits to bring forth abundant rain.

"Wildhorse" magnesite is usually foundin sedimentary beds from a hydrothermal or hot water alteration of serpentine. It is a magnesite mixed with hematite in the simplest terms. "Wildhorse" is a relatively newcomer stone being used in Native Americanjewelry and by fetish carvers that is minedin the Gila Wilderness area in southern Arizona. Its chocolate-brown color witoff-white spots resembles that of an appaloosa horse thus so it is often calledAppaloosa or Crazy Horse magnesite
