Hunters would give their fetishes to "Keepers,” who would place the fetishes in a clay pot and sprinkle medicine meal on the fetish and recite a prayer. The hunter would then place the fetishes in a buckskin bag and carry the bag over the heart. Rituals like these were believed to yield great power to the Zuni and Navajo people, and the tradition continues today to produce the incredible Zuni fetish necklaces and other jewelry pieces beloved by collectors and enthusiasts around the world.
